Easy Outs costs You more!

How often do you pay for imaging on patients who present with low back pain? For many, an X-ray, CT scan or even MRI is an easy way out for a treating physician. (That’s about $85, $495 and $769 respectively). But the American College of Physicians (ACP) recently reported they have found “strong evidence that routine imaging for low back pain with X-ray or advanced imaging methods such as CT scan or MRI does not improve the health of patients.”

ACP continues, stating that these advanced studies “shouId only be performed in A/_ selected high-risk patients who have severe or progressive neurologic deficits…”. So how does this issue play out in workers’ compensation? In should be through
your utilization review program. Effective U/R will greatly reduce the number of useless imaging studies ordered by physicians and paid by your carrier/employer. Apply the latest and best medicine — evidence based medicine – to your injured workers and save money. Hard to beat that combination.
