Infected with PHS!

Infected with PHS… post-hospital syndrome.

I wish I could take credit for this phrase, but its origin comes from a Yale cardiologist, Dr. Harlan Krumholz.

A recent The New York Times article by Paula Span has the following headline concerning PHS: “The illness is bad enough. The hospital may be even worse.”

We all know the side effects of inpatient admissions, especially among the vulnerable and elderly, including:

  • Increased stress;

  • Interrupted sleep;

  • Deconditioning;

  • Weight loss.

Researchers believe these factors contribute to costly re-admissions. Our experience has been that effective Nurse Case Management during the post-discharge period will make a positive impact on the health of patients and re-admissions.
