$3 Billion Misdemeanor

Used to be that misdemeanor meant something relatively minor, say, jaywalking, speeding, shoplifting something small.  But prescription drug manufacturing giant GlaxoSmithKline has taken misdemeanor to a whole new level.

In what is being called “the largest case of health care fraud in history”, GSK, a British company,  is volunteering to pay $3 BIllion in fines to settle a misdemeanor criminal charges that the company illegally marketed Paxil and Wellbutrin “off label”. GSK targeted the antidepressant Paxil to patients under age 18 when it was approved for adults only, and it pushed the drug Wellbutrin for uses it was not approved for, including weight loss and treatment of sexual dysfunction, according to an investigation led by the U.S. Justice Department.
