A Few Doctors Are Just Plain Bad!

So says Dr. Otis Brawley, author of How We Do Harm. Dr. Brawley says,

“I know doctors who are just plain bad. Why do they continue to practice without impediment? The answer is simple: because no one is looking over their shoulders, no one files a disciplinary complaint, no tribunal of peers punishes them unless they do something spectacularly awful.”

Dr. Brawley has plenty of experience to draw on. He is chief medical and scientific officer and executive vice president of the American Cancer Society. He also serves as professor of hematology, oncology and epidemiology at Emory University. This in addition to years of practice at America’s largest public hospital, Grady Memorial in Atlanta. Dr. Brawley continues

“I have seen doctors do horrible, irrational things under the guise of seeking to benefit patients…The system rewards us for selling our goods and services and we play the game (emphasis added).

Most doctors do many good things to increase the health and welfare of their patients. There are those few who are interested primarily in selling the most goods and services – this surgery, that device, those drugs.

OMCA’s accredited utilization management program works hard to keep your patients and claimants out of harms way. Using nationally accepted criteria and expert physician advisors we attempt to ensure that those for whom we are responsible receive the best of care for conditions that are medically necessary. This is the best medicine and, most often, the least expensive medicine.

Call us.  We can do better.
