“Betcha can’t eat just one.” – Bert Lahr (aka The Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz) pitching Lay’s Potato Chips over 50 years ago

The same line rings true today when it comes to work comp and the opioid-sedative combination. Betcha can’t take just one!

Writing in HealthDay News, Robert Preidt reports on a Stanford-based study of primary care visits from 2002 to 2009. The results were presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pain Medicine. The following statistics regarding opioid and sedative joint-use will not be a surprise to those of us in work comp:

  • 12% annual increase in dual prescriptions;

  • 30% of painkiller deaths also involved sedatives;

  • Narcotic painkiller users are over 4 times more likely to be using sedatives.

When it comes to PolyPharmacy, “Betcha can’t stop at just one” is the rule, not the exception.

We are not The Cowardly Lion when it comes to aggressive Pharmaceutical Review.

Call us. We can do better.
