Big Blue Scores! (IBM not UK)

Those of you who read my columns on a regular basis know of OMCA’s constant crusade against unnecessary hospital admissions. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) routinely publishes statistics on the thousands of deaths caused by hospital based “super viruses” and the billions of dollars spent in antibiotic drug resistance costs. Conservative estimates are 8 million additional annual hospital days are due to these problems.  This is why we focus our attention on aggressive UR, strategic nurse case management, and peer to peer physician intervention to minimize unnecessary hospital admissions.

IBM researchers have recently announced a new medicine that could someday stem the tide of these super infections. IBM’s breakthrough is a “nanomedicine”, a synthetic, biodegradable particle that is delivered as a cream or gel to an infected region.  The trick is the IBM polymer can identify, isolate and attack the bad bacteria cells while leaving the good cells alone.  According to IBM they can kill 100% of bad bacteria and minimize recurrence.

Much independent testing and approvals are to come before these nanomeds are broadly used, but they have much promise.

IBM is doing better.

Call Us. We can do better.
