Dead Man’s Hand

March is the month for the release of Zohydro. Consumer groups say “It will begin killing people as soon as it’s released.” It’s hard to argue with them.

Zohydro is pure hydrocodone, the only one of its kind. More than 40 consumer related and drug and addiction groups have petitioned the FDA to withdraw its approval. You may recall that approval was given against the advice of 11 of 14 specialists upon whose advice the FDA relies.

Zogenix, the maker of Zohydro, says its introduction into the marketplace won’t add to the addiction problem. The FDA says all is under control because they have made Zohydro add a warning label (yeah, that ought to work).

Those who treat addicts and those whose lives are ruined by addiction must get very tired sometimes. Often it seems the cards are stacked against them. This is one of those times. It’s quite likely that we’re seeing the beginning of a new OxyContin.

The experts say don’t do it. The bureaucrats say it will all work out. It’s the addicts and their families that hold the dead man’s hand.

Call us.  We’ve got to do better.
