Dialysis or Amputation — You Pick!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the hospital, here comes the CDC warning about “superbugs” again. The latest category causing the most alarm is carbapenem- resistant enterobacteriaceae, or CRE.

As reported in USA Today, modern antibiotics are ineffective and physicians are having to consider outdated, more toxic antibiotics, some of which can damage kidneys. The associate chief medical officer at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, (Dr. Fishman) purports to have asked CRE patients, “Do you want a toxic antibiotic and end up on dialysis, or would you prefer to have a limb amputated?”

The USA article quotes the professionals as highlighting the need to clean and wash, remove catheters as soon as possible, quarantine infected patients and always wear clean gloves and gowns. The headline screams “Detection and Diligence are Best Weapons vs Superbugs”!

I have another weapon and it starts earlier in the process…aggressive UR and diligent nurse case management. Stay out of the hospital if you can and get out as quickly as possible.
