Flunking the Flim Flam Man

In our industry, many times we bump up against patients and their loved ones who are desperate and in crisis because of serious health issues. Unfortunately, these individuals are particularly susceptible to a new fraud — the medical con man. So writes Liz Szabo in USA Today quoting Arthur Caplan, Bioethics Head of NYU Langone Medical Center. Caplan offers several tips to spot the medical con man:

  • He requires lots of upfront cash,
  • Treatment locale is usually outside the US,
  • Claims are too good to be true,
  • Testimonials versus science,
  • No one else knows about this treatment regimen,
  • A conspiracy exists to suppress these discoveries. (This drives me crazy!)

OMCA RN Case Managers are in a unique position to guide and navigate patients/claimants who are in crisis. When treating protocols are presented that are outside the norm, not indicated by the science or just don’t pass the laugh test, we empathize, advise, and improve outcomes.

Call Us. We can do better.
