Get Busy Living, or Get Busy Dying

“Get busy living, or get busy dying.” – Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Or to quote James Brown (1970), “Get up. Get on up. Shake your arm. Stay on the scene.”

I am not trying to be flippant when it comes to claimants with chronic pain. However, Andy Dufresne and James Brown speak the truth when it comes to activity and pain management.

A new study recently published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, and highlighted in a The New York Times article by Gretchen Reynolds, illustrates and proves that regular exercise can alter how a person experiences pain. These findings conclude what many of us have believed anecdotally for years:

  • The longer patients workout, the greater the tolerance to discomfort;

  • Exercise changes pain perceptions and helps individuals better perform activities of daily living.

Our Nurse Case Managers, in conjunction with treating physicians and skilled rehab professionals, motivate claimants and patients to get off the couch and get busy living.

Long term ever-increasing doses of narcotics is not the answer.

Call us. We can help you “get on up.”
