It’s Not What You Know…

…It’s Who You Know.

 

When your surgeon sits down with you for that serious chat, optimally you will hear the words “minimally invasive and laparoscopic.” Hopefully, small incisions and fiber-optic cameras will be the preferred procedure versus traditional “open” surgery.

 

Most people just assume “minimally invasive” is the default protocol because it’s proven to involve:

• Faster recovery;
• Less pain;
• Fewer infections;
• Lower medications.

 

“Of course my physician will go this way…” Unfortunately that’s not always the case.

 

A new study, published in the medical journal BMJ and highlighted by Dr. Marty Makary in The Wall Street Journal, paints a different picture. Studying 1,000 hospitals and examining four common procedures — appendectomy, hysterectomy, colectomy, and lung lobectomy — they discovered a complete unpredictability when it came to using minimally invasive surgery.  Essentially, in a third of the hospitals, a majority of the procedures used the “open” method.

 

Reasons given include the following:

• Hospital culture;
• Lack of surgeon training;
• “That’s how I like to do it.”
