Known Knowns and Unknown Unknowns

This quotation from former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld reminds me of what conscientious physicians must feel as they ponder prescribing medical marijuana.
Shefali Luthra, writing in Kaiser Health News, explains the cannabis knowledge gap clinicians must address before they can effectively treat with THC. Obviously, traditional medical school instruction did not adequately cover this emerging issue and questions like these:
- What’s the right dosage?
- Should we smoke it, rub it, eat it, or vaporize it?
- Will it really help glaucoma, pain or nausea?
- Are the Feds going to bust my practice?
- Do I have malpractice concerns?
Managing “unknown unknowns” is a challenge, but in order to improve outcomes and control costs, we will all have to do better.
