There are several mitigation strategies to use against opioid abuse and misuse. They involve hard work, accountability and extra effort. Although there is limited research as to the efficacy of the below list, most industry stakeholders agree to the following techniques:

  • Utilize prescription drug monitoring programs;
  • Urine drug screens;
  • Physician-Patient written contracts;
  • Screening tools for substance-use disorder;
  • Lowest effective dosage;
  • Shortest effective duration;
  • Tamper-resistant product;
  • Regular monitoring and reassessment;
  • Patient education.
