My Achy Breaky…Wherever

With apologies to Billy Ray Cyrus who made “My Achy Breaky Heart” popular, apparently some states are more “achy breaky” than others.

The latest report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and summarized in USA Today, explains that 259 million opioid painkiller prescriptions were written in 2012.  Essentially that’s one bottle for every adult in America.  However, these scripts are not spread evenly throughout the country.

If you live in Alabama, you must really be in pain.  That state’s physicians wrote 143 scripts for every 100 residents.  The Southeast (including Kentucky) was generally among the top users, while people in Hawaii were less frequent abusers–only 52 prescriptions per 100 residents.  Must be the weather…

Dr. Tom Frieden, CDC Director, says it simply and directly: opioids “can be an important tool for doctors to use…but they are not the answer every time someone has pain.”
Call us.  We can do better controlling your “Achy/Breaky.”
