New Stresses in Atlanta

Everyone has heard crazy excuses used to play hooky and avoid work.
But a three-time felon just took a fake excuse scam to a dangerous and expensive level. A recent press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Georgia summarizes the fraud and warns businesses to be on the lookout for COVID-19 workplace schemes.
In this case, a forged doctor note claiming a positive COVID-19 diagnosis caused the company to stop operations, send the other employees home with pay, and undertake deep cleaning sanitation.
The loss was estimated to be in excess of $100,000, not to mention the distress to coworkers. Evidently, workplace cons are on the rise, as there is a National Center for Disaster Fraud Hotline to report if you think you’re being victimized.
Vigilance and due diligence remain the keys to doing better, whether it comes to COVID-19 or any other workplace issues.
