News From the Pain Management Front

Among studies recently published dealing with pain management, two are particularly interesting:

Steroid injections are no more effective than a placebo in treating back pain – participants received either steroids, etanercept or saline solution.  No difference in outcomes.

Lyrica is no more effective than placebo painkillers – 2 studies, one involving HIV neuropathy, the other peripheral diabetic neuropathy, followed patients who were on Lyrica for 6 weeks and then switched to a placebo or continued Lyrica for 13 weeks.  There was no significant difference between the group continuing Lyrica and the group switched to the placebo.

How much do you spend on steroid injections and Lyrica? Science shows they are of dubious value for pain management.
