Not All About That Bass

Sorry Meghan Trainor, it’s all about the formulary, the medical evidence, the cost, and patient focus.

 

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) recently published a position statement on drug formularies in workers’ compensation systems. Many jurisdictions are contemplating the establishment of these formularies. Some states use the ACOEM Practice Guidelines and some use ODG. At least five states have implemented their own proprietary state-specific formulary protocols.

 

The ACOEM highlights the potential benefits from adopting a well-organized formulary, including:

• Lower drug costs;
• Fewer opioids;
• Fewer ineffective/expensive compounded medications;
• More generics.

 

But there are downsides if the system is not founded on evidence-based medicine principles and not well managed. These include:

• Delayed care;
• Less compliant patients;
• Burdens on providers.

 

We practice in both formulary and non-formulary locales and know the benefits from well-run systems. It’s not just about the cost or the bureaucracy. Our customers and payors know it’s about the science, the patients and the outcomes.

 

Otherwise, all you get is too much bass.
