Pill Popping at Warp Speed

Mitch Albom, is a famous author, journalist and broadcaster. People know him from his bestsellers, “Tuesdays with Morrie” and “The Five People You Meet in Heaven”. For a non Insurance professional he reveals tremendous insight about the abuse of pharmaceuticals in a recent syndicated article headlined–”Popping Pills: Our Medicated Nation”.

The keys points he makes include:

  1. The average American fills 12 scripts a year
  2. Pharmaceutical industry typically spends twice as much on advertising as it does on research
  3. Only America and New Zealand even allow direct-to-consumer drug ads

Mr. Albom has the right answer to the question of how many pills should one take. His correct answer, “Only as many as you need”.

At OMCA we know that determining how many pills a person actually needs is crucial to controlling costs. If your payer is not effectively addressing questions of:

  • Appropriateness
  • Relatedness
  • Extent
  • Duration
  • Alternatives
  • Adverse Effects
  • Co-Morbidities

Then they are not doing their job in “approving only those pills that are needed.”
