“Send It In, Jerome!”

Reflecting on the end of the college basketball season, I thought I would lead in with Bill Raftery’s famous call when Pitt’s Jerome Lane “sent in” his famous backboard-shattering slam dunk.

Robert Ceniceros, senior editor at Risk & Insurance, recently highlighted the results of a California Workers’ Compensation Institute (CWCI) study. This research documented that when it comes to urine drug screens, some physicians are “sending it in” too often.

Experts concur that drug testing is integral to any treatment plan that involves narcotics, and that screening can reduce usage. However, the big questions are: how often should you be “sending it in,” and do you act on the findings?

Results to be published from California urine drug testing reveals:

  • $100 million in annual costs;

  • Per test cost increase from $80 to over $200;

  • 4,537% increase in number of tests from 2004 to 2011.

At OMCA, we believe in “sending it in.” But you don’t send it in every month, and you must be prepared to act on the findings by changing treatment plans when aberrant behavior is discovered.

Call us. We can do better.
