Slamming the Supplements

So who has the toughest/most aggressive industry lobby in Washington D.C.?

Not the NRA, not the AARP, not even the tobacco companies. According to Congressman Henry Waxman, D-CA, it’s the alternative medicine industry. Writing in USA Today, Liz Szabo reports there is even a Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus.

So, now I have a new book on my summer reading list. It’s written by Paul Offit, Chief of Infectious Disease at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and is titled Do You Believe in Magic? The Sense and Nonsense of Alternative Medicine.

The impact of alternative medicine on everyday life is astounding:

  • 50% use it

  • 10% use it on children

  • $34 billion industry

  • 54,000 supplement varieties

  • 50,000 adverse reactions per year

  • 59% believe the FDA regulates supplements — They DON’T!

Alternatives can claim to “support your whatever,” but only FDA approved medicines can claim to treat, diagnose, cure or alleviate.

Consult with your treating physician. Communicate with your RN. Make sure your healthcare provider knows your complete history and current regimen, whether regulated or over the counter.

That’s the only way to do better.
