This was the typical medical instruction from the Norman Rockwell era family physician from many early television sitcoms. Not bad advice, but apparently Marcus Welby should have also included an order for a daily walk on the treadmill!

So concluded Laura Donnelly, Health Correspondent for the UK’s The Telegraph, who when summarizing a research trial published in the British Medical Journal, uses this headline: “Exercise just as good as drugs in war on major disease.”

This joint study from Harvard, Stanford and the London School of Economics involved 15,000 volunteers and measured the impact of exercise when treating heart disease.

The overwhelming conclusion: Exercise, along with drug therapy, can dramatically improve outcomes.

England is a mirror of the United States when it comes to prescription usage and lifestyle deficiencies:

  • 11 scripts per person in 2000;

  • 18 scripts per person in 2010;

  • Only 14% of adults exercise regularly.

Effective functional restoration and improved outcomes require lifestyle changes. So take the two aspirin, but get up off the couch!
