Assuming you have watched any TV sports since the 1970s, you have heard the Miller Lite commercials styled “Tastes Great!  Less Filling!” The campaign was a vocal and sometimes hilarious debate between athletes and celebrities arguing about beer.

A recent article in The Hill and Bloomberg View highlights a new, shrill debate between Big Pharma and Big Insurance about rising health care costs. Representing Big Pharma is the lobbying group Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). And in the other corner we have America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP).

AHIP says it’s the crazy drug pricing that is bankrupting families and inflating health care budgets. They point to the $1,000 per pill cost of Solvaldi, which is used to treat Hepatitis C.

Big Pharma blames the current insurance business model which reimburses for hospitalizations but requires expensive co-pays for drugs that might keep patients well. They claim the drug cost debate is merely a distraction because Big Insurance doesn’t want to talk about premium increases.

Toss in a little politics about who got the best deal from the administration for supporting ObamaCare, and we have a full-blown feud.

If you’re the ultimate payer, you will find nothing funny about this fight. Big Pharma and Big Insurance…you can assume they are looking out for their well-being through special interest lobbying.

Who’s looking out for you?

Call us.  We can do better.
