The End of the Beginning

“The end of the beginning.”

~ Winston Churchill after a decisive North African victory against the Germans

Maybe it’s “The beginning of the end.” ~ Me

InsuranceJournal.com recently summarized a Workers’ Compensation Research Institute (WCRI) study of opioid use with the following headline:

Study Finds ‘Noticeable’ Drop in Opioid Prescriptions in Workers’ Compensation Cases

This was a significant 2012-2014 research project that examined trends in opioid use and prescribing patterns in 25 states from 337,000 nonsurgical workers’ comp claims with nearly 2 million prescriptions.

After you read the following opioid-related highlights, feel free to channel your Churchillian alter ego:

  • Overall spending down 5%;
  • Utilization decrease of 11%;
  • Education, formularies and treatment guidelines CAN work.

I don’t expect Big Pharma to ever unconditionally surrender when it comes to opioids. However, limiting, controlling and managing is our decisive victory.

The beginning of the end means we should all do better to build on this momentum.

Call us. We can do better.
