There’s A New Sheriff In Town

“There’s a new sheriff in town, and his name is Reggie Hammond,” Eddie Murphy, from 48 Hrs., sure put a scare in the redneck bar when he put on his badge and started to clean house.

There’s also a new cholesterol-lowering drug coming to town with a scary price tag, and its name is PCSK9 (branded as Praluent). This script has a $14,000 per year patient cost, and as we know, statin therapy can be a lifetime drug regimen. This puts my personal $10 per month generic statin to shame.

Most lay people don’t realize that cholesterol management is sometimes covered by workers’ compensation. We perform UR and case management for many first responders in jurisdictions whose cardiac, hypertension and stress issues have the “presumption” of work-relatedness, and thus statins are often prescribed and expensed. In addition, we routinely review complex/catastrophic cases with claimants on a myriad of pharmaceuticals where the treating physicians relate necessary cholesterol treatment to be a covered byproduct of other occupational issues.

So what do you want from your sheriff?

At OMCA, if the price tag is too high, the relatedness unsupportable, or the efficacy questionable, we put on our badge, round up our posse and go to work.

Call us. We can do better.
