Turning the Volume Down

Amidst the cacophony of business these days, I found a peculiar and unexpected respite last week. It was in New Orleans (not known for a soothing atmosphere), and it involved a group of attorneys, both plaintiff and defense. Arguing is their bread and butter, and conflict is a given.

I had the good fortune to attend the Winter Meeting of the Workers’ Compensation Section of the Kentucky Bar Association. For three days, 30 or so lawyers sat in the same room and talked, not about personalities or character, but rather about the law. They presented, questioned, discussed, and yes, argued about a variety of issues important to the legal side of the workers’ comp system in Kentucky.

It was incredibly refreshing to witness these men and women debate one another with civility; the type that most disagreeing folks used to demonstrate but now seems so lacking in our public discourse. It has become so rare that its presence is now the exception and not the rule.

Congratulations to these professionals who turned the volume down so low that they could actually hear one another. If only they could bottle it.

Call us. We can do better.
