Those of us who travel know the rare joy when the hotel desk clerk asks if we want to “upgrade” our room. “You’re darn right, I do!”

Now, what if at your next hospital admission, the doctor asked if you would like to “upgrade” back to your home. Home cooking, a regular bed, no MRSA, and your own cable package. “You’re darn right, I do!”

Dr. Daniela Lamas, writing in The New York Times, reports on a Mount Sinai/Johns Hopkins study on patients with four common diagnoses who could be treated without being physically in the hospital. These include:

  • Heart failure;
  • Emphysema exacerbation;
  • Pneumonia;
  • Cellulitis.

Over 100 patients were treated at home with daily visits, lab draws, IVs, and even scans. When compared to a similar control group who were treated in the hospital, guess what? Home-bound care resulted in:

  • Shorter hospital stay;
  • Fewer scripts required;
  • Better outcomes;
  • Less expense.

The delivery and financing of medical care today will be much different in the near future. The winners will be those systems best able to consider proven options/alternatives and embrace change.
Who doesn’t want to “upgrade?”

Call us. We can do better.
