Walk It Off!

I grew up in the 1960s and played for football coaches whose medical advice to injured athletes was “walk it off!” Early in my workers’ comp career, that was also the mantra of some unenlightened employers. They didn’t want to hear about or treat comorbidities or roadblocks that might hinder outcomes.  And guess what, this short-sighted philosophy was expensive in the long run.

I’m pleased to report that today my clients, plaintiffs’ bar and comp regulators have embraced the advocacy-based model that we practice called Functional Restoration, like our Restart-FX program. Simply put, when faced with complex medical disabilities, you must address both the physical and mental issues that become barriers to functionality.

I’m linking to a white paper by Peter Rousmaniere and Rachel Fikes entitled “How to Overcome Psychosocial Roadblocks: Claims Advocacy’s Biggest Opportunity.” These authors get it. If you want to do better…you can’t just walk it off.

Call us. We can do better.
