“We Have Met the Enemy and He is Us” ~ Walt Kelly’s Pogo

Last week a remarkable and sobering thing happened in the U.S. Congress. James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence, was testifying in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee. The purpose of his testimony was to enumerate and describe the major threats facing the United States.

 

As you might imagine, al-Qaeda was on the list, as was North Korea, cyber-terrorism, and domestic terror. The entry that stunned me was “…an insidious blot of synthetic and addictive drugs.” Imagine, a major source of threat to our entire country is self-inflicted. It’s not from the Middle East or Asia. It’s from New York and California and Florida and, yes, from Kentucky.

 

Kentuckians know all too well the catastrophic effects of years on OxyContin, Actiq, hydrocodone and others. We know sections of our state where a generation of productive lives has been erased. We wish there had been a “Pill Mill Bill” years ago.

Workers’ compensation is not responsible for all addiction. But we are responsible for a great deal of it. The methods of the past haven’t worked to curtail this destruction. There are better ways. We can help you with that.
