Wet Wipes For Grandpa

We have written extensively in this newsletter about hospital “superbugs” and how these deadly infections are running rampant. Hospitals have spent fortunes decontaminating operating rooms and trying exotic antibiotics to stem the tide.

Now, as reported by Associated Press writer Lindsey Tanner, a new study by the Hospital Corporation of America is suggesting a new approach. Rather than just targeting high risk germs, how about targeting high risk patients?

Essentially, ICU patients (many of whom are sicker, weaker and more likely to become infected) are given a twice daily nose swab with a drug fighting ointment and then a daily body cleansing with antiseptic wipes. Initial evaluation of the study concluded that these patients were 40% less likely to contract a serious bloodstream infection.

Minimizing hospital admissions/procedures, with aggressive utilization and peer review, is the best first line defense. However, once you’re in, don’t forget the wet wipes.
