Whac-A-Mole Kentucky Style

We all know about the abuse of OxyContin, especially in the workers’ comp arena.  Fortunately, the manufacturer of the drug has been changing its formula to eliminate some of the “high” from injecting or snorting after the pill is crushed.

Unfortunately, here comes OpanaER, an extended-release with oxymorphone.

Van Ingram, Executive Director of the KY Office of Drug Control Policy was recently quoted in a USA Today article by Donna Leinwand Leger highlighting the fast growth of Opana as a new drug of choice for abusers.   He noted the following for KY:

  • For 2010 the key ingredient in OpanaER (oxymorphone) was present in 2% of Kentucky’s overdose cases.
  • For 2011 Oxymorphone was present in 23% of overdose victims.

Mr. Ingram has asked the CDC to pinpoint where these new drugs are coming from, but he has yet to receive a response.  Here’s the history we all know too well–

  1. Percocet
  2. Vicodin
  3. Lortab
  4. OxyContin
  5. Actiq
  6. Fentanyl
  7. OpanaER
  8. ??

Just playing Whac-A-Mole won’t get it done.
