What Comes First? The Chicken or the Irritable Bowels?

My apologies to Aristotle who first puzzled over the chicken versus the egg question.  Nevertheless, tell me if this doesn’t sound familiar?  My injured claimant is now 10 years post successful back surgery when my new client asks me to review the file to attempt to stabilize the medicals.

Unfortunately, this poor man has been receiving a constant and ever increasing dose of narcotic/painkillers/morphine equivalents.  The all too familiar pharmacy cocktail now also includes, Viagra, Ambien, Nexium, Effexor, Provigil, etc., etc.  Low and behold we now have a new diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome which needs treatment on the Comp Carrier’s nickel. Notwithstanding the fine print of every prescription in the world that warns of both constipation and/or diarrhea, the treating physician/pain management doctor now links IBS to the original injury/surgery.

If your surgery claimants are on strong painkillers 60-90 days post-op, then you have a problem.
