What You Need is a Smarter Doctor!!

A new study published in the journal Lancet says what you need is a smarter doctor. Stick with me on this one.

Researchers in many countries continue to study the prescription drug epidemic, particularly in the United States. We know that we are huge users compared to the rest of the world; that an average of 14,000 Americans die each year from prescription drug overdoses; that emergency room treatment of overdoses increased 500% from 2004 to 2009.

Speculating that Americans aren’t really in so much more pain than the rest of the world, scientists struggle to come up with a specific explanation. They realize easy access and huge advertising campaigns are a major factor. But some say it’s lack of education – not yours – your doctors’.

Nicholas Kardaras, PhD, an addiction specialist in New York notes that medical school curriculum devotes one day out of 6 years to talking about opioid addiction. “Many doctors will prescribe pain pills and not speak to their clients about taking them responsibly.”

Fixing this problem “begins in the doctor’s office” according to addiction specialist Jorg Pahl, MD.

Changing doctors’ behavior is like turning a battleship. It takes an unrelenting effort over a long period of time. But it can be done. Most of you don’t have access to world-class physicians and scientists whose talents can be brought to bear on this struggle. But we do and we can help.

Call us. We can do better.
