“Wisely and slow, they stumble that run fast.”

~William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

Friar Lawrence was telling Romeo to be cautious before rushing into a romance, full of pitfalls, with Juliet.

Evidently the Drug Enforcement Administration is following the Bard’s advice regarding the scheduling of marijuana. Although 25 states have legalized medical marijuana in some form, for the time being, it remains a Schedule I controlled substance by the Feds. This is the highest, most restricted category, and essentially says there is “no currently accepted medical use” of this substance.

Along with this announcement, the DEA has implemented a policy change that should foster additional research by expanding the number of approved cannabis manufacturers. Currently, the University of Mississippi holds a monopoly on producing marijuana for scientific study. The DEA has now instituted a protocol allowing other institutions to apply for and receive approval to scientifically study marijuana.

There are more than 400 chemicals in marijuana plants, and the DEA hopes to scientifically identify which chemicals are helpful for medical intervention. With the right evidence, the Food and Drug Administration could approve a product, and the DEA could reschedule the category.

As payors of medical care, there are many challenges and obstacles along the cannabis food chain.

We can help you avoid the stumbles and proceed wisely and slow.
